Spotlight on Mary K Kerr
This is the first of an occasional series of columns that will enable NHC members to share their passions and interests—art, music, hunting, hiking, traveling, quilting or anything else.
The column will appear in the newsletter as well as on the website. Members are encouraged to submit their stories, advice, tidbits, and tips to Donna Donahue at email@example.com or send them to P.O. Box 189, Middlebury, VT 05753.
This inaugural column features Mary K Kerr, a world traveler extraordinaire. Since 2008, Mary has been actively involved with SOLA (School of Leadership of Afghanistan). This boarding school, based in Kabul, is for Afghan women, ages 16-20, who are selected to attend on full scholarship. SOLA is a non-profit institution that depends on donations. SOLA’s Headmistress and Co-founder is Shabana Basij-Rasikh, a 2011 Middlebury College graduate. SOLA’s mission is to expand educational and leadership opportunities for Afghan women who are committed to returning home after completing their college studies abroad.
SOLA helps the returning graduates find meaningful jobs. Mary’s support of SOLA includes mentoring students via Skype, traveling to Kabul, and fundraising. Her passion for and commitment to these extraordinary women will help them rebuild Afghanistan, their beloved country.
